Theatre Company to Design
As a starry-eyed drama graduate looking to make an impact on the world, I co-founded Moonbeam Theatre, a multi-sensory theatre company for children with Special Educational Needs during lockdown. Securing Arts Council England funding, we worked closely with schools, adapting workshops to meet individual needs.
This is where I was introduced to design. Creating sensory costume and props all day leading up to our performances fueled a fire within me. I loved to imagine and make things.
Imagine being able to design something that’s not only useful in a theatre space, but can have an impact on people every single day. I was motivated to study a design discipline that would have this impact.
My first insight into precise technical creativity was a personal project during lockdown, when I decided to build a scale model of a tiny house. Carefully laying out all the materials around me with my trusty glue gun at the ready, my construction of this model highlighted the intersection of creativity, science and technology. It combined both practical skills and technical understanding, extending into 3D digital models. I learnt about parallel and series circuits, testing out breadboards and calculating resistance. This gave my the aspiration to take my ideas further, realising that technical understanding could bring my creativity to life.
